UP PRESS Releases Award-Winning Screenplay

The film by Maryo J. de los Reyes has received critical acclaim and has graced various international film festivals. Now the University of the Philippines Press presents Irma Vega Dimaranan’s award-winning screenplay, Naglalayag—the moving story of a woman’s search for wholeness as she journeys through midlife.

Naglalayag tells the story of a May-December affair between a middle-aged judge and a young taxi driver. Brilliantly acted by Nora Aunor and Yul Servo, the couple’s story brings to light society’s perceptions of gender, age, and class. It is a story of love, departure, and acceptance, woven in a manner which, according to critic Danton Remoto, “melds almost effortlessly the conventions of Greek and Shakesperean tragedies, and the harshness of Philippine reality.”

Irma Vega Dimaranan, a graduate of UP Los Baños, writes for television, film and documentary features. Naglalayag has received nine major awards in the 2004 Manila Film Festival, including Best Story and Best Screenplay, and was also the major winner in the 53rd FAMAS Awards. The film also won for Nora Aunor, Yul Servo, and Maryo J. de los Reyes the best actress, best actor, and Special Jury awards, respectively, at the 2004 Brussels International Independent Film Festival.

Included in the book are still photos of the most memorable scenes that have made this film a resounding critical success.

Naglalayag is published by the University of the Philippines Press and is available at Aeon Books in Katipunan, Popular Bookstore in T. Morato, Solidaridad, Powerbooks, National Book Store, Bound Bookshop, Fully Booked and at the University of the Philippine Press bookstores in UP Diliman, Baguio, Iloilo, and Davao.
